John Hampden’s Ale Bottle
Local hero commemorated in beer.
An empty bottle of Chiltern Brewery’s John Hampden’s Ale. In the run-up to the English Civil War, John Hampden became a National figure, standing up to Charles I over taxes. He was one of the ‘Five Members’ whose attempted unconstitutional arrest sparked the Civil War. Hampden and the other Five Members are commemorated in the state opening of Parliament every year when the doors are slammed in the face of the monarch’s messenger.
