Event Details

An illustrated talk by artist Cally Trench about portraiture in turbulent 17th-century England, focusing on the Museum’s two great portraits associated with the renowned Peter Lely (1618-1680) – one almost certainly by him, and one almost certainly not. Could the portrait of Lord Wharton and his family have been painted by Joan Carlile (c1606–1679), one of the first professional female British portrait painters?

Lord Wharton (1613-1696) was a soldier and politician, a Puritan and a friend of Oliver Cromwell. Moses Tryon was the descendant of refugees from religious persecution in the Netherlands.

The two portraits can be seen in Wycombe Museum’s Art Gallery.
