April’s Chair of the Month is this simple Windsor chair, made in about 1920. It is just one example of the many different types and styles of Windsor chair made in High Wycombe.

At the moment, we at Wycombe Museum are working towards the very exciting opening of our new Chair Discovery Centre. It’s a second site for Wycombe Museum on St Mary Street where we will be storing our collection of almost 250 chairs not on display in the museum galleries, plus our extensive furniture archives.

As you can imagine, with that many chairs to fit in, we are needing to be very methodical with planning the layout to maximise storage space.

Recently, our collections volunteers have been measuring all of the chairs bound for the Chair Discovery Centre, so that we can group them by height and work out how far apart we need to space our shelves. This is one of 102 chairs in the 70-89 cm tall grouping, or what we are considered a ‘small standard’ size chair!

The Chair Discovery Centre will be opening this Summer. Visitors will be welcomed free of charge on regular open days through the year. Check the Chair Discovery Centre home page for the latest information on how to visit.
